Mindset Matters Workshop
July 24 and 25
If you are an educator, regardless of grade level or type of learning environment, you are invited to attend an in-person workshop at Southwestern Community College in Sylva, NC on July 24th & 25th.
Mindset Matters is designed for teachers to empower learners by exposing them to entrepreneurial thinking while immersing them in entrepreneurial experiences that will enable them to develop creativity and critical thinking, effective problem solving, communication, teamwork and other entrepreneurial skills – skills that will enable them to succeed regardless of their chosen path.

About The Award
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund’s Career Award for STEM Teachers recognizes outstanding STEM teachers in North Carolina public primary and secondary schools.
The award provides $175,000 over five years. It is available to North Carolina teachers with an outstanding performance record in educating children and demonstrating a solid knowledge of STEM content.
This award presents opportunities for professional development and collaboration with other master science and/or mathematics teachers who will help ensure their success as teachers and their satisfaction with the teaching field. The award allows schools and school districts to develop and fully empower teachers as leaders in the field.
Teachers working in hard-to-staff, economically deprived classrooms in North Carolina will receive special consideration. Efforts to integrate environmental science and climate change into STEM-related curricula will also receive special consideration.
The Fund and the State Board of Education recognize that improving STEM education in North Carolina will require systemic revision of K-12 instruction.
Teachers who are content-area experts with pedagogical skills are critical to ensuring students’ success in understanding STEM subjects. These teachers can make a difference by serving as change agents for their students and other educators across the state.

Free Event for Children Ages 3-11
Talking Trees Children’s Trout Derby
Oconaluftee River Islands Park , Cherokee, NC
August 3 @ 6:00 am – 2:00 pm
Registration opens at 10am on Friday, August 2, 2024 and closes at 6pm.
On Saturday, August 3, 2024 registration will open at 6am and close at 10am or until we reach 2,000. Fishing will start at 8am and end at 12pm.
Make sure you save the date and get your rooms and campsites booked.
Join in the fun at the Talking Trees Children’s Trout Derby in Cherokee, NC, where kids aged 3-11 can experience the thrill of fishing for free. Hosted amid the picturesque landscapes, this family-friendly event offers youngsters the chance to reel in their very own catch while creating cherished memories. With free fishing poles provided and exciting prizes up for grabs, children can learn the art of angling and connect with nature in a supportive and enjoyable environment. So, gather the little ones and head to the riverbank for a day of outdoor adventure and excitement at the Talking Trees Children’s Trout Derby.

This 8th grade lesson plan uses the Rethink content to create 4 stations utilizing the Infectious Disease Module lessons on Bacteria covering both current standards LS 8.1, 8.1.1, and 8.1.2 and the updated standards 8.L.1, 8.L.1.1, and 8.L.1.2. This lesson includes:

Project Brainy is a six-session neuroscience-based curriculum designed for OST programs. The curriculum enables middle-school students to build social-emotional skills, engage in interactive STEM learning, and increase literacy.
Accepted programs will be provided:

A neuroscience, literacy, and SED-focused curriculum

Training and continuous support for program staff

A stipend of $1,500 at program completion

How to become a program partner:

Commit one staff member to be trained and to implement the six-session curriculum

Provide project-related feedback through check-in meetings, virtual observations, and self-report data

The annual Synergy Conference brings together afterschool providers, informal educators, community stakeholders, students, business leaders, politicians, and others from all around North Carolina to focus on afterschool and summer learning. As always, we will have an exciting line-up of engaging workshops and vibrant speakers, unique networking opportunities, special recognition and awards, and meaningful professional development.
This year’s theme is Everyday Influencers! This theme underscores the incredible influence that afterschool professionals and programs have on children, youth, families, and communities. It emphasizes the ways in which afterschool providers and programs shape students’ physical and emotional safety, social-emotional learning, academic learning and recovery, and growth and development.
