Project Atmosphere is a teacher professional development workshop offered by the American Meteorological Society’s (AMS) Education Program that is specifically designed for kindergarten through grade 12 teachers who teach science courses with atmospheric content. Project Atmosphere introduces teachers to the latest technologies and techniques for sensing, analyzing, and forecasting weather. National Weather Service and other National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) personnel present on the following topics: surface and upper-air observations and analysis; radar imagery and interpretation; satellite imagery interpretation; weather forecasting; thunderstorms and severe storms; hurricanes; global climate change; and teaching and dissemination of weather information. Participants explore ways products of these technologies and techniques can be employed in school studies of the atmospheric environment. The program includes lectures, tutorials, seminars, hands-on laboratory exercises, and field trips.
Eligible participants are teachers and supervisors of precollege science who have had sufficient college-level training to profit from the material presented; teach or supervise the instruction of meteorology or an applicable course at the precollege level; have demonstrated leadership in teaching, curriculum development, or in-service training of fellow teachers; and are prepared to help promote weather education in their home regions, including a minimum of one training session for precollege teachers upon completion of the workshop. Teachers interested in promoting minority participation in science are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications must be submitted online.

Award(s):
Teachers selected to attend the workshop receive a $300 stipend, round-trip transportation, housing (single hotel room for 6 nights), meals, instructional and laboratory supplies, tuition, and a set of instructional materials. Participants may earn three semester hours of graduate credit in EAS 514 Selected Topics in Atmospheric Studies though the California University of Pennsylvania.

The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation offers Academic Enrichment Grants designed to develop classroom and extracurricular programs that improve student learning. The foundation considers proposals that foster understanding, deepen students’ knowledge, and provide opportunities to expand awareness of the world around them.
Eligible individuals should consider applying if:
• They have a unique idea for a project that will supplement regular classroom curriculum or an after-school activity.
• Their students have ideas for enrichment activities or a need for strengthening their academic experiences.
• They have facilities, expertise, and community endorsement, but need additional resources for materials, time, and transportation.
The Academic Enrichment Grants provide funding for programs that nurture the intellectual, artistic, and creative abilities of children from low-income households. Eligible applicants are employed by schools or nonprofit organizations, have direct and regular contact with low-income students in prekindergarten through grade 12, have the background and experience to complete the project successfully, and are willing to work in collaboration with the foundation. Applications must be submitted online.
