Modeling Biology and Chemistry Workshops in Western North Carolina
Are you a High School Biology or Chemistry teacher who is interested in teaching with a more effective inquiry approach to science instruction? Come learn about Modeling Instruction – an approach to teaching where emphasis is placed on the use of conceptual models to teach content and developing skills in fostering scientific discourse.
With the support of an NSF research grant, The Science House will be offering summer professional development in Modeling Biology and Modeling Chemistry during the summers of 2022 and 2023. Teachers will take part in intensive summer institutes and receive follow up support during the subsequent academic years. Stipends will be offered for teachers’ participation in the professional development and research activities. These courses will be offered in western North Carolina over the next two years. Participants are responsible for their own travel. Grant partner districts have priority for selection, though all interested teachers are encouraged to apply.

Applications are being accepted for the virtual summer NIEHS STaRS Experience
Middle and high school science teachers and community college instructors are encouraged to apply for the 2022 NIEHS Science, Teachers and Research Summer (STaRS) Experience. STaRS 2022 is a virtual one-week professional development (PD) program, designed and conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
The goals of the PD are:
To enhance participants’ understanding of basic research in the environmental/biomedical sciences; and
To enable participants to transfer knowledge received from this program into classroom applications and to better support their students, including those from underserved populations.
The 2022 virtual STaRS Experience will be held online by NIEHS and will be a one-week program. The program will run from Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 15, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. each day. STaRS participants are expected to attend the full one-week program. The program will contain many interactive lessons and activities with special topics relating to COVID-19. STaRS participants will receive a $1,000 stipend to cover their time spent during the program.
Requirements:
Applicants must currently teach science in a middle school, high school or community college (Out-of-state educators are encouraged to apply); and
Applicants must be available and fully engaged for the full one-week program (July 11-15)
Women and individuals of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

The 2021-2022 NCSTA Professional Development Institute has transitioned from a face-to-face conference to a virtual conference. It will be held on February 15, 16, 17 and 19. Our Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday sessions will begin at 4:30 and we are planning on 3 back-to-back session times each day. A choice of 4 sessions are available during each time period. Saturday’s sessions will start at 9:00 am and continue until 12:30 pm..
