Applications for the 2021 Student STEM Enrichment Program (SSEP) grant awards are now open through the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Electronic applications will be accepted no later than 4 p.m. EDT on April 15, 2021.

Bob Thompson Excellence in Energy Award


The award includes:
$1,000 cash grant to the teacher to use as he/she/they choose in the classroom
All-expenses paid trip to both NEED’s Annual Youth Energy Conference and Awards in June (Washington, D.C.) and the National Energy Conference for Educators in July (Albuquerque, NM).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must be: 
1. Currently teaching (and will in the next school year) science in a K-12 classroom (public, private, charter).


2. Engaged in the teaching of energy in the classroom and/or local community.


3. Dedicated to the idea that a kids teaching kids approach to education is valuable and showcase this dedication in the classroom.


4. An energy nerd – believing that energy is fun, cool, and a unifying theme in science.


5. Fun and possess an inquisitive mind, playful spirit, and desire for life-long learning!

SciMatch goes virtual!


Thanks to the support of the Biogen Foundation, we are pleased to announce that we are launching a new-and-improved virtual edition of our wildly popular SciMatch program. In April 2021, 100 North Carolina Scientists from all walks of life will share their love of what they do with 100 middle schools across the state!

The Science House (Northwest Office) Presents: Using Makey Makey to Target Invention Literacy

Location: NC Center for Engineering Technologies (NCCET) 1990 Main Ave SE, Hickory, NC 28602

Cost: $85/person (with take-home Makey Makey kit)

Description: Join us for a day of exploration and invention using a device called a Makey Makey! With the Makey Makey, students can make any conductive material act as a computer keyboard. Because it comes preprogrammed, students with no coding experience can use it and experiment with it as they start to learn coding.

Capitalize on the maker movement in your classroom! Learn to use the Makey Makey to enhance any curriculum! Teachers joining us will be able to check out Makey Makey kits to use in their classrooms. Gina Barrier of The Science House will be conducting this workshop in Hickory, NC from 9 am – 3 pm. Registration fee is $85. Participants who register before 1/7/2021 will receive their own Makey Makey. Limited to 25 participants. This program qualifies for Digital Learning competencies!

Description:The Science House, NCSU, is conducting a STEM To Your Doorstep Professional Development session for K-16 STEM teachers at the Northwest Outreach Office!Do you need free equipment, technology and support for your science, math, and CTE courses? The Northwest Outreach Office of The Science House, NC State University, offers a free equipment loan program for STEM teachers! We have laptops, iPads, GPS units, TI graphing calculators, digital microscopes, and Vernier probeware such as temperature sensors, motion detectors, force sensors, water quality kits, weather kits, physiology kits and so much more! We also have Vernier’s wireless sensors! All you need to participate in the loan program is a little training on how to use the equipment! This program qualifies for new Digital Learning competencies!
