The National Park Service (NPS) is collaborating with the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) to build the capacity of NPS units and US Department of Education funded 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLCs) to design and deliver science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programming. The program fosters partnerships between formal and nonformal educators and engages kindergarten through grade 12 youth from underresourced or underrepresented communities in after-school time or out-of-school time place-based citizen science and environmental monitoring, preferably using components of the NEEF Greening STEM model.
The NPS and NEEF seek to advance mutual STEM education goals by providing 21st CCLC participants with access to authentic STEM educational experiences that use the environment and NPS’ unique mission as a context for engagement. Programming is expected to include STEM content, instructional strategies, training approaches, collaboration, and dissemination technologies with a focus on NPS-related subject matter. NEEF has additional funding available for AmeriCorps VISTA placements to help support applicants’ program implementation.
New applicants and previous NPS 21st CCLC Greening STEM grantees in good standing who desire to continue their programs are eligible. Previous grantees may also apply with a different project design. The program is open to all NPS units interested in partnering with local 21st CCLC programs. These NPS units include a NPS partner that is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (or working through a fiscal agent) whose mission is focused on serving an NPS unit in the United States and the improvement and responsible use of that site.
