Penn State Center for Science and the Schools Research Experience for Teachers Virtual Program
Our RET program is a 7-week full-time VIRTUAL research experience (June 14 – July 30, 2021) where teachers are placed with Penn State science or engineering faculty to conduct authentic research that contributes to the on-going work of their laboratory placement. Teachers also receive professional development from CSATS science education faculty to help translate their experience to the classroom through a classroom research project. There will be asynchronous and synchronous activities that will be scheduled considering the time zones of teacher participants. For participation in the summer, teachers receive a $5,000 stipend along with up to $1,000 of classroom supplies to implement their research project with their students. An additional $1,500 stipend is available for teachers who implement their classroom research project during academic year following their summer research and conduct action research culminating in an Impact Report.
We are elated to announce that the #IAmCS campaign will be having its First Annual Student-Led Computer Science Virtual Summit for students interested in STEM, Computer Science, and Technology! The summit is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 15, 2021 and the theme is “BREAKING BARRIERS ~ It’s not what the future holds for you. But, what you hold for the future!” This summit will be an opportunity for elementary, middle, and high school students across North Carolina to not only connect with other students interested in these areas but an opportunity for them to be uplifted and inspired to break down barriers that hinder us from pursuing the endless possibilities that lie within STEM, Computer Science, and Technology.
t would be absolutely wonderful if you, your school, and your district would help us spread the word about our summit to your students! If any of your students would be interested in attending our summit, please have them register by completing our registration form.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Mary Hemphill-Joseph or Sheneka Revis to let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or need additional materials regarding this summit. Thank you for your time and for the great work that you are doing for NC students! #IAmCS
Virtual Training on Inquiry-Based Math!
With the support of COMAP, Lauren Seigel (MathHappens Foundation) and Usha Kotelawala (Developing a Math Toolkit), and Maria Hernandez (Retired NCSSM Math Instructor) have developed inquiry-based math lessons around The Math of Covid-19 Pooled Testing, and are offering a virtual workshop this week and next week. The free lesson materials are appropriate for Pre-Algebra through Precalculus students, and workshop participants will receive these materials. MathHappens has some hands-on kits that can give teachers and students a chance to do some fun experiments and are willing to send these kits to teachers.
We are currently offering the workshop through Metamorphosis Teaching. There is a small fee for the workshop for educators who would like to receive CEUs. If participants are not interested in receiving credit for the workshop, they should email Maria Hernandez ([email protected]) for registration information.Click this link for the April 1st (1 – 2:30 PM EST) workshop registration
